Genetic Engineering And Immunotherapy Of Cancer - 1394 Words
Genetic Engineering and Immunotherapy of Cancer Genetic engineering is a highly controversial but incredibly powerful and significant branch of biotechnology that will heavily impact the future of human life, if we choose to utilize it. Humans have utilized the engineering of life for thousands of years through selective breeding, which has strengthened the traits in plants and animals that are helpful to humans. Even though we as a species have employed this for ages, it was not until recently that the specific mechanisms were discovered and studied. Once Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA)* was discovered as the molecule that acts as the blueprint for all living organisms, researchers have been searching for ways to alter it. In the 1960s,â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Cells also contain a gene called Proto-Oncogenes*, which does the exact opposite as TSG when activated and turned into Oncogenes. How and when these genes are switched on and off determine the cellââ¬â¢s growth, and ultimately the development of cancer. If the TSG is s witched off, this can cause problems. Furthermore if the Oncogenes are activated, the cells can become antisocial and ignore the tissue growth regulation mechanisms and begin to proliferate uncontrollably. When this happens, it usually forms a tumor*. This structure then continues to grow and mutate, since many regulatory genes and their promoters have been damaged or changed. The tumor is now even more vulnerable to mutation. This can then deactivate DNA repair genes, causing further problems and susceptibility. Cancerous cells that reach tumor status are able to because they are not recognized by T-Cells* of the immune system. T-Cells are critical for removing harmful or infected cells from the body. T-Cell protein receptors bind to foreign protein receptors expressed on harmful cells to identify the dangerous cells. After identification, the T-Cell destroys the harmful cell. However, since T-Cells can only identify ââ¬Å"non-selfâ⬠cells, they are often unable to target the cancerous cells that are ââ¬Å"selfâ⬠. This allows most cancers to escape detection by T-Cells and proliferate. However, if human T-Cells were made to be able to detect andShow MoreRelatedHuman Genetic Engineering : Is It Good?1242 Words à |à 5 PagesHuman Genetic Engineering: Is It Good? Objective: * To determine the how changing the throwing arm length and/or the counterweight mass affects the distance and direction that a can is thrown by a trebuchet. Trebuchet Test Results Our trebuchet had some technical and engineering damage and it did not worked properly. When we launched the sauce can, it moved in opposite direction (away from the target). We will write a custom essay sample on Trebuchet Lab or any similar topic only for you Order Now In the other hand, when we tried it in previous moments it did worked. Design: Drawing of your trebuchet Questions and analysis: 1. Did your trebuchet worked correctly? If so, what was the maximum distance achieved? If not, why did it fail? It failed because the materials were damaged. The rope that attached one end of the throwing arm with the counterweight was damaged. This did not let the throwing arm to complete it cycle, to the can was launched before it was supposed to and the can moved backward. Also, the throwing arm was too loose and it moved from one side to the other side. 2. How might you measure the maximum height your trebuchet could launch the can? You might you measure the maximum height your trebuchet could launch the can using a reference point. Watching which was the highest point that the can reached and measure the distance from it. 3. What simple machine is the throwing arm? The throwing arm is a lever and a lever a long stick that you push or pull against a fulcrum to move something. 4. What drawback and advantages does the trebuchet have in battle? Some drawbacks and advantages of the trebuchet in battle are that it helped to throw heavy things at enemies, have greater range capability and greater accuracy than the catapult, it launch object at a higher speed and its power is the counterweight. . How might you measure the maximum distance your trebuchet could launch? You might measure the maximum distance the trebuchet can launch the can by performing many trials, measuring and recording the different distances. The largest distance is the maximum distance your trebuchet could launch a can. 6. What component makes the majority of a trebuchet? The component that makes the majority of the trebuchet is the frame because i s supports the other components such as the throwing arm and the counter weight. . What is used to power the trebuchet? What is used to power the trebuchet is the counterweight because it is what pulls the throwing arm. 8. What is the object that is thrown called? The object that is thrown is the projectile. 9. Compare and contrast the trebuchet and the catapult. * A trebuchet is a catapult that uses a counterweight to supply the energy for throwing. * Catapults are any device that throws an object. * The trebuchet has greater range capability and greater accuracy than the catapult. Both are used to throw an object, a large distance. * The trebuchet launch an object at a higher speed than the catapult and its power is the counterweight. 10. How does the placement of a pivot point on the arm affect the mechanical advantage of the trebuchet? The higher you place the pivot point on the arm, the higher the object will go. The lower you place it the lower the object will go. 11. What sho uld the mechanical advantage be for optimal throwing distance? The power into and out of the arm must be the same, so forces applied to points farther from the pivot must be less than when applied to points closer in. 12. What should the mass of the counterweight be for optimal throwing distance? The mass of the counterweight must be much greater than that mass of the object. 13. What should the length of the sling be for optimal throwing distance? Long slings have a smaller angle of release, short sling have a larger angle of release. 14. How is the throwing accuracy affected by the above mentioned factors? Mechanical advantage- The power into and out of the arm must be the same, so forces applied to points farther from the pivot must be less than when applied to points closer in. Otherwise, the object would not reach the target. * Mass of the counterweight- The mass have to be the correct one, a small mass would not power the trebuchet and an extremely large mass will change the direction of the can trajectory. * Length of the sling- Long slin gs has a smaller angle of release, so the can will reach a short distance. Social Media Plays an Important Role in Influencing the Consumer Behav
Question: Discuss how social media plays an important role in influencing the consumer behavior? Answer: Introduction: With the progress of science and technology, the concept of marketing as well as business transaction has evolved in a considerable way. The concept of business is no longer confined to the traditional system of purchase and sale, but rather it has evolved to use technological tools for extending itself to the masses. With the popularity of social media tools, such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. the business organizations are able to communicate more freely with the customers, and are even capable of keeping a track on their performance by analyzing the consumer attitude on the social sites towards their organization. Further, the organizations enjoy the opportunity to gain wide recognition across the globe, in a short span of time through the effective use of social media tools. Keeping these factors into consideration, the researcher here intends to discuss and explain, with the help of several articles, the significant role social media plays in the process of influencing c onsumer behavior (Goh et al. 2013). Discussion: Topic 1: Incorporation of Social Media Tools in the Marketing Strategy: The social media tools, such as Facebook, Twitter, etc not only help to connect the users with their family and friends, but if effectively used, it can also improve the relation between a business organization and its consumers. One of the most popular social sites, Facebook, not only helps a company gain brand recognition, but it also helps the potential consumers stay updated with the recently launched products, attractive discounts and offers, or new service of the company. According to Richradson and Lemoine, Facebook largely assists in the process of increasing brand awareness among the masses, and in fact the research suggested that approximately 53% of the Facebook users daily log in and check Facebook (Treem et al. 2012). This implies that an organization, if can open up a Facebook business page, and advertise about its products, its content will be viewed by a huge number of existent consumers. Further, it can also draw new consumers, as the whole organization enjoys higher chance of recommendation to friends and family, by the existent consumers, through Likes or Shares. Every business organization always has a group of target audience, who are most likely to consume the product or avail the service of the organization. Facebook, helps in identifying the target group of audience, with the help of information, regarding demographics, location or interest of the consumers. Opening up a Facebook page and inviting people to like Facebook business page is not sufficient; an organization must ensure that the advertisement of a particular product is relevant to the people, who are viewing an advertisement. Hence, the organizations, now also can take use of the Adverts Create Tool, which will help the company in reaching out to the specific and more relevant consumers. The diagram below especially highlights the importance of Facebook, among all the social media tools, for the purpose of marketing (Malthouse et al. 2013). Figure 1: Diagram Showing the Statistical Data Regarding the Popular Use of Facebook for Business Again, Wamba and Carter have claimed that Twitter no way does lag behind in boosting the promotion of an organization. Their research suggests that 64% of the Twitter users get influenced to buy products and avail service that they come across online. Considering this, the organizations have also opened up a twitter Account, customizing it, by giving it a personal touch, through meaningful image, strongly suggesting the motive and purpose of the organization. They have further pointed out that around 800 million users of YouTube regularly check out the latest videos at least for fifteen minutes per day. Hence, an organization now posts their advertisements on YouTube or Instagram as well. However, Carter also explains the importance of an organization to plan formulate a well-structured advertisement on these sites, as people using these sites, will be more interested in exploring a well-formed story, rather than a mere advertisement outlining the benefits of a product (Laroche et al . 2013). However, if any organization desires to engage itself in promotional activity via social sites, it must approach the idea with an organized attitude. Social sites can either make or mar business. This is because it happens more than often, that on Facebook or Twitter, an user have had an unpleasant experience, and he or she intends to post defamatory or negative feedback on the social sites, which completely spoils the reputation of the organization. Hence, a strong social marketing team must be formed, that will always keep a track on the response on these social sites, so that as and when a negative feedback is posted, they can instantly take immediate action reverting back with an apology. Again, Twitter has a major drawback, as it is a micro blogging site, and it usually reaches out to a limited number of followers only. For this reason, an organization must ensure that it uses hash tags in its tweets, following the latest trend, so that it can reach out to a wider mass (Gensler et al. 2013). Topic 2: Social Media and Customer Support: J.D Power has claimed that around 67% of the customers have affirmed that they feel their queries to be sufficiently answered and their problems to be instantly responded, because of the online presence of their favorite brands. This online presence of a firm enables the company to interact regularly with the consumers, and solve their queries, give them feedback around the clock. The regular interaction with the customers often helps in not only retaining them for a longer period, maintaining their brand loyalty, but also in increasing their consumer number many fold. To substantiate this point, Power has taken a recent example of a loyal consumer of Samsung, who has been a regular follower of the company; he has recently asked for a free product of the recently launched phone of Samsung, and had also presented the request with a sweet animated picture of a dragon. However, Samsung immediately refused such a proposal, but to be polite, had sent him back a picture of a kangaroo drawn by them. The elated customer, soon made both the pictures viral on Reddit and as this picture got too viral in all the other social sites, it fetched enormous profit for Samsung (Sano et al. 2014). It often happens that a consumer is not content after using a product of their favorite brand, and because of such unpleasant experience, expresses his frustration on the social sites. Now, an organization, owing to the social sites can respond in a positive way to the complaints or grievances of the consumers, acknowledging their apology as well as sending an immediate reply to their queries. To explain this point, Power also refers to the incident of Citibank where a consumer had an experience of a bike accident, and reported to the organization about the mishap via Facebook. The organization, immediately took action, did not let the complaint ruin their reputation by sending a gift card to the customer. This not only helped the company in customer retention , but the company also got its total number of consumers and followers on social sites, increase by multiple times, owing to its kind feedback to the consumer . Around 68% of the customers being studied, affirmed the importance of customer service in determining their choice of selecting or continuing with an organization. Furthermore, the research also showed that approximately 95% of the customers will not only discontinue their service with an organization, due to poor customer service, but will also tell about their poor experience to peers and family. So, to keep up the reputation, an organization must constantly keep in touch with the changing desires and needs, complaints or demands of the consumers through the social sites (Rapp et al. 2013). Topic 3: Social Media and Sociological Model of Consumer Behavior: The Sociological model of consumer behavior claims every individual is part of a social structure, to which they share a sense of belonging. Keeping this in mind, a consumer is influenced to buy a commodity depending on the demand of the commodity in the society he is living in (Smelser et al. 2013). This is the reason why Solomon claims that an organization must engage in the process of market segmentation, whereby the company can select the target group of consumers, based on the gender, preferences, location, before promoting its products randomly among the masses. This will help the organization reach out to the group of consumers who are most likely to be influenced by the advertisement on the social sites. This is the reason, companies rely more on social media, rather than traditional media for the promotion of their products. While the traditional media mostly address a general group of audience, social sites such as Facebook, Google+, etc. provide an option to the company to filter its advertisement in terms of gender, location, age, and other factors before posting it online (Lawler et al. 2014). A product, which is meant for the youth culture, will have not much significance for the group of people belonging to grey culture. Hence, an organization, nowadays takes help of Paid Targeting Services, through Facebook or LinkedIn that assures the company that it is circulated among the most relevant group of customers, and does not get lost in the multitude (Gregoire et al. 2015). However, though the idea of Sociological Model of Consumer Behavior can be put to use, by implementing the target audience method, the organization must remember that it is quite an expensive process altogether. Further, in order to know the target audience, an organization has to engage in much extensive research which will also be time consuming. Again, demographical identification of customers can lead to the omission of some customers, and this may have a negative impact on its sale growth (Aral et al. 2013). Topic 4: Consumer Research and Online Presence of the Organization According to Morrison, approximately 81 % of the shoppers do an extensive research before buying their products, and hence the online presence of an organization is very important. Morrison further states that 61% of the people, were found on the basis of a research, that they will never straightaway purchase a product, but will rather compare its cost with that of the other products, and check the public review of the specific product before making the purchase decision (Hsu et al. 2013). Keeping this fact into consideration, an organization needs to be able to update its customers constantly about the new discounts and offers, and the latest products and recently launched services. Since, most of the customers tend to research online about the best available products or services, the organization can influence the consumers to buy their products merely by their online presence (Bolton et al. 2013). However, recent research has suggested that the customers will simply unfollow or block the company site if they understand that the copany is trying to influence them into buying their products. So, the whole idea is to make connection with the customers primarily, valuing them for being their customers, offering them interesting discounts or involving them in price winning competitions. This will enthuse the consumers about the company, and will lead to the word of mouth publicity of the organization, in a much effective way (Fan et al. 2014). Conclusion: Social media plays an important role in influencing the consumer behavior. Research suggests that 71% of the consumers feel attracted to buy a product instantly as they come across the products on social sites. Hence, the organizations nowadays involve much time and invest much money on the marketing procedure through social sites. However, it must be remembered that any organization should be well organized and actively engaged in the process, otherwise it may lose customers or get its reputation ruined, owing to the negative feedback from the customers that get viral in no time. In addition to this, social marketing can prove to be an expensive marketing method, as it must engage new employees for this marketing system, spend money for the promotion of the content among the targeted audience, and if necessary, hire people as part of the paid sponsorship method. Hence, the organization, must ensure that it is making the best use of these tools, and reaching out to the maximum possib le number of consumers, before investing heavily in this (Chen et al. 2012). Rugby And Football Essays (589 words) - Ball Games, Football Codes
Rugby and Football The thick, broad-shouldered athlete breathes heavily and grunts with each step as he and his teammates push mightily against the opposition. His arms are locked over his teammates' shoulders, all of their heads down. The two teams are pushing against each other like two moose fighting over territory. He looks down to see the ball, sitting just in front of his feet. If he could just hook it with his foot and heave it to his teammate behind him... This is what every player in a scrum is thinking while they fight each other for possession. Rugby is the true sport of men, because you wear no pads, and it is even more violent than football; however, football requires that you wear pads, thus being the true sport of want-to-be men. The rules of these similar yet vastly different games are extremely complex, so only the basics are necessary to distinguish the better sport. In football, the primary rule is that you must advance the ball forward by throwing it or running with it. Once a player with the ball is downed, the entire team lines up again, and the ball is snapped to the quarterback. The short pause in-between each down may not seem significant, but it definitely takes its toll on the excitement. In rugby, however, the primary rule is that you can only advance the ball by running with, kicking, or passing it. With passing, though, you can only pass the ball backwards or directly to your side, never forward. Like football, you score by running the ball into the endzone or by kicking it through the uprights. Also, you must touch the ball to the ground for it to count, and it is worth five points. When kicking, the ball can be kicked from anywhere spontaneously. If it passes through the uprights, it is worth three points, as in football. The equipment for the two sports is widely different, with football requiring much more. In football, players must wear a large set of pads, covering most of their body, and a masked helmet. The ball is made up of an inflated rubber bladder, surrounded by stitched leather, and it appears ellipsoidal in shape. Most players now wear cleated or spiked shoes, but flat-soles are often worn for artificial turf surfaces. But rugby, being the true sport of men, uses no pads of helmets. In fact the only equipment that are somewhat similar in both games can be found from the ankles down. Players wear a jersey, usually long-sleeved, athletic shorts, and cleated shoes. The ball has an oval shape to it, and is blunter than a football so that it may easily be bounced and dropkicked. The origins of football trace back to ancient Greece when they played a form of football know as harpaston, and the Romans played a similar game, harpastum. In medieval times, another form of football, calcio, flourished in Italy. Most modern versions of football however, originated in England, where a form of the game was known in the 12th century. Rugby is said to have originated when a boy at Rugby School in Rugby, England picked up and carried the ball during a game of football in 1823. Previously, the rules had only allowed the ball to be kicked. As I said before, rugby is the true sport of men. It is the supreme test of strength, endurance, determination, and agility. Whereas in football, the players are so cocky and greedy about how much money they will make during this game, that most of them do not even work their hardest to win, as long as they make a living.

Influence of Parents on a child
Influence of Parents on a child Free Online Research Papers The influence of parents on a child can be the most important influence given to a child in life. The reason it is the most important is because the parents should be spending the most time with the child. Parents are accountable to God for how they influence their children. It helps children identify themselves through the parentââ¬â¢s role modeling. The parentââ¬â¢s positive influence provides a secure environment for proper development of children. The parentââ¬â¢s influence can help add to better society. Therefore I believe that the influence of parents on a child is very important. The first reason parents influence is most important is the parents should be spending the most time with the child. They should be nurturing the child from infancy. Quality time is important but quantity is also important. Day by day, hour by hour contact with the parents helps provide a secure atmosphere for the child to grow. Too much running around and dropping kids off at day cares and baby sitters can be disruptive and unsettling to a child. Sometimes it canââ¬â¢t be helped depending on a familyââ¬â¢s situation, especially if there is only one parent. In this challenging situation a single parent needs a lot of support from extended family and friends. Much of the childââ¬â¢s basic personality is developed in the first seven years. Parents have great opportunity to use this time to instill proper values. Secondly, I believe parents are accountable to God for how they influence the children He gives them. This is a good motivation for setting a good example for your children. They are constantly watching your behavior and responses in all of lifeââ¬â¢s situations. They soon find out that parents arenââ¬â¢t perfect but they should see a strong desire to do good in showing love and help to others, working hard and being responsible citizens. Also a parent sets the tone for a childââ¬â¢s belief towards God. It has been said that how a child views his earthly father can be correlated to how he believes in God. If he has a loving, fair, just, and compassionate father who believes in God it will be easier for him to have faith in God. Iââ¬â¢m sure a mother could have this same affect too. There are exceptions to this rule because God can take a child out of the most difficult situation and make a wonderful person out of him. This is the exception not the rule, the miracle, the hope God gives to each individual. So parents should want to aid in helping a childââ¬â¢s positive attitude towards God. The third reason parents influence is important is it helps a child identify himself/herself through the parentââ¬â¢s role modeling. A little boy can see that he has certain things in common with his dad and a girl with her mom. They can see there is a purpose for why they were made different. They learn that there are two different sexes in life with differing strengths and abilities. Men typically are stronger, and more aggressive, while women can have a stronger inner strength, and be more sensitive and intuitive. There are also exceptions to these qualities but they seem to be the norm, or used to be the norm. Personalities differ which can have a bearing on an individuals strengths or abilities. But the role modeling of parents can give a child a basic understanding of his role in life. Fourthly, the parentââ¬â¢s positive influence provides a secure environment for proper development of a child. When you consider the emotional, social, spiritual, and intellectual side of a child you realize there is a lot to influence. Parents must display emotional stability. They will learn that people have good days and bad days, but they need to see parents being good problem solvers. Socially, they need to see how parents interact with others in working situations, hospitable situations, and charitable situations. I already commented on the spiritual aspect of the parentââ¬â¢s influence, however again I will say parents displaying a belief in a God who is in control of all things will give much confidence to the child. Intellectually, parents can influence the importance of a child using their minds to learn what they can. To show the child that learning can be fun and reaching their potential is a worth while goal. Lastly, the importance of a parents influence on a child can be recognized by the impact it has on society. Much power is in the hands of the parents in helping the child become a responsible adult in society. So actually when parents have influence on a child they are also influencing society. This shows how great their responsibility is and important. Ultimately a child makes his/ her own decisions in life. A child may have the best parents and make many unwise decisions or the worst parents and make very wise decisions because of individual will. Still the best hope for a childââ¬â¢s outcome is to have good parents to contribute and better society. In conclusion the influence of parents on a child is very important. When one considers the amount of time they can have with their child and the influence they can have on the child who becomes part of society one can see the awesome responsibility given. The quality and quantity of time, our responsibility toward God, setting proper role models, providing security, and showing responsibility all should be great motivators in helping us see how parents have the most important influence on a child. Analytic Philosophy Is Not A Systematic Philosophy Essay -- Education, L
ââ¬Å"The use of analytic philosophy in education has some direct bearing on students, but perhaps it is most useful for educators in helping clarify what they propose to teachâ⬠(Ozmon Craver, 2008, p265). While the idea is well intentioned, the problem in todayââ¬â¢s society is that teachers do not have much academic freedom and they are not well trained in analyzing their own curriculum. Todayââ¬â¢s educational system is very much entrenched in standards and rote memorization of concepts. Teachers are expected to achieve certain scores on standardized tests or suffer from scrutiny from government entities or their school administrators. This need to teach an overabundance of standards has resulted in a system where teachers are con... ... middle of paper ... ... Craver, 2008, p267). One could argue that the analytic is exactly what our students are missing in order to become the best they can be. We are producing students who lack the skills to think critically. The focus on learning how to use language and understand it is essential to creating the mind that is capable of dissecting all the messages they encounter in a meaningful way. In the classroom, analysts are concerned about materials and methods and believe that both need to be scrutinized. Unfortunately, as long as our public education institutions are dependent upon government funding to offer their programs, the restrictions and constraints that come along with accepting that money will hinder the analytic process. While the analytic philosophy could have a profound effect on our educational system, our current structure just will not allow it to take hold.

Cigarettes and Lungs Cancer - Research Paper Example Lung cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related mortality all over the world. There are basically 2 predominant types of lung cancer and they are small cell lung cancer or SCLC and non-small cell lung cancer or NSCLC. The latter constitutes 85% of all lung cancer cases. NSCLC is further divided into large cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and adenocarcinoma (Molina et al, 2008). All these types of lung cancers are different in terms of clinical presentation and histopathological characteristics. But management plans and prognoses are similar. The most frequently encountered NSCLC is adenocarcinoma arising from the mucosal glands of the bronchi. It represents 35-40 percent of all lung cancers. It is mostly seen in the peripheral portion of the lung. It is the most common histologic subtype. It can also manifest as scar cancer. This subtype is mostly seen in non-smokers and may present as a bronchoalveolar form of multifocal tumors. Squamous cell carcinoma accounts fo r about 25 percent of lung cancers. Unlike adenocarcinoma, the cancers are mainly seen in the central parts of the lungs with the classical clinical presentation being proximal bronchus cavity. It is characterized by keratin pearls and has the tendency to exfoliate. It is often associated with hyperkalemia. 10-15 percent of lung cancers are caused due to large cell carcinoma that is easily diagnosable by chest X-ray. Unlike adenocarcinoma, the cancers are mainly seen in the central parts of the lungs with classical clinical presentation being proximal bronchus cavity. It is characterized by keratin pearls and has the tendency to exfoliate. It is often associated with hypercalemia. 10-15 percent of lung cancers are caused due to large cell carcinoma that is easily diagnosable by chest X-ray. Lung cancer metastatises to liver, bones, adrenal glands, brain, spinal cord and pericardium (Molina et al, 2008). Regional incidence pertaining to lung cancer is actually variable and it predominantly depends on the prevalence of cigarette smoking. For instance, in Utah, the incidence of lung cancer is lowest and smoking is lowest there (Molina et al, 2008). On the other hand, in Kentucky, the incidence of smoking is highest and so is the case with lung cancer (Molina et al, 2008). Another interesting aspect is, with the decline in the prevalence of smoking, the incidence of lung cancer is predominant in form er smokers than in current smokers. For example, according to a study by Yang et al (2005), "more than 5000 patients whose lung cancer was diagnosed between 1997 and 2002, only 25% were current smokers and more than 60% were former smokers" (cited in Molina et al, 2008). The epidemic of lung cancer in the 20th century is undoubtedly caused by cigarette smoking. The development of lung cancer secondary to smoking is directly related to the number of cigarettes smoked per day and the duration of smoking. The nicotine content and tar content also influence the development of lung cancer. Tobacco contains about 300 substances that are harmful of which more than 60 are potent carcinogens (Lee, 2001).
