Rugby and Football The thick, broad-shouldered athlete breathes heavily and grunts with each step as he and his teammates push mightily against the opposition. His arms are locked over his teammates' shoulders, all of their heads down. The two teams are pushing against each other like two moose fighting over territory. He looks down to see the ball, sitting just in front of his feet. If he could just hook it with his foot and heave it to his teammate behind him... This is what every player in a scrum is thinking while they fight each other for possession. Rugby is the true sport of men, because you wear no pads, and it is even more violent than football; however, football requires that you wear pads, thus being the true sport of want-to-be men. The rules of these similar yet vastly different games are extremely complex, so only the basics are necessary to distinguish the better sport. In football, the primary rule is that you must advance the ball forward by throwing it or running with it. Once a player with the ball is downed, the entire team lines up again, and the ball is snapped to the quarterback. The short pause in-between each down may not seem significant, but it definitely takes its toll on the excitement. In rugby, however, the primary rule is that you can only advance the ball by running with, kicking, or passing it. With passing, though, you can only pass the ball backwards or directly to your side, never forward. Like football, you score by running the ball into the endzone or by kicking it through the uprights. Also, you must touch the ball to the ground for it to count, and it is worth five points. When kicking, the ball can be kicked from anywhere spontaneously. If it passes through the uprights, it is worth three points, as in football. The equipment for the two sports is widely different, with football requiring much more. In football, players must wear a large set of pads, covering most of their body, and a masked helmet. The ball is made up of an inflated rubber bladder, surrounded by stitched leather, and it appears ellipsoidal in shape. Most players now wear cleated or spiked shoes, but flat-soles are often worn for artificial turf surfaces. But rugby, being the true sport of men, uses no pads of helmets. In fact the only equipment that are somewhat similar in both games can be found from the ankles down. Players wear a jersey, usually long-sleeved, athletic shorts, and cleated shoes. The ball has an oval shape to it, and is blunter than a football so that it may easily be bounced and dropkicked. The origins of football trace back to ancient Greece when they played a form of football know as harpaston, and the Romans played a similar game, harpastum. In medieval times, another form of football, calcio, flourished in Italy. Most modern versions of football however, originated in England, where a form of the game was known in the 12th century. Rugby is said to have originated when a boy at Rugby School in Rugby, England picked up and carried the ball during a game of football in 1823. Previously, the rules had only allowed the ball to be kicked. As I said before, rugby is the true sport of men. It is the supreme test of strength, endurance, determination, and agility. Whereas in football, the players are so cocky and greedy about how much money they will make during this game, that most of them do not even work their hardest to win, as long as they make a living.

The reason it is the most important is because the parents should be spending the most time with the child. Parents are accountable to God for how they influence their children. It helps children identify themselves through the parent’s role modeling. The parent’s positive influence provides a secure environment for proper development of children. The parent’s influence can help add to better society. Therefore I believe that the influence of parents on a child is very important. The first reason parents influence is most important is the parents should be spending the most time with the child. They should be nurturing the child from infancy. Quality time is important but quantity is also important. Day by day, hour by hour contact with the parents helps provide a secure atmosphere for the child to grow. Too much running around and dropping kids off at day cares and baby sitters can be disruptive and unsettling to a child. Sometimes it can’t be helped depending on a family’s situation, especially if there is only one parent. In this challenging situation a single parent needs a lot of support from extended family and friends. Much of the child’s basic personality is developed in the first seven years. Parents have great opportunity to use this time to instill proper values. Secondly, I believe parents are accountable to God for how they influence the children He gives them. This is a good motivation for setting a good example for your children. They are constantly watching your behavior and responses in all of life’s situations. They soon find out that parents aren’t perfect but they should see a strong desire to do good in showing love and help to others, working hard and being responsible citizens. Also a parent sets the tone for a child’s belief towards God. It has been said that how a child views his earthly father can be correlated to how he believes in God. If he has a loving, fair, just, and compassionate father who believes in God it will be easier for him to have faith in God. I’m sure a mother could have this same affect too. There are exceptions to this rule because God can take a child out of the most difficult situation and make a wonderful person out of him. This is the exception not the rule, the miracle, the hope God gives to each individual. So parents should want to aid in helping a child’s positive attitude towards God. The third reason parents influence is important is it helps a child identify himself/herself through the parent’s role modeling. A little boy can see that he has certain things in common with his dad and a girl with her mom. They can see there is a purpose for why they were made different. They learn that there are two different sexes in life with differing strengths and abilities. Men typically are stronger, and more aggressive, while women can have a stronger inner strength, and be more sensitive and intuitive. There are also exceptions to these qualities but they seem to be the norm, or used to be the norm. Personalities differ which can have a bearing on an individuals strengths or abilities. But the role modeling of parents can give a child a basic understanding of his role in life. Fourthly, the parent’s positive influence provides a secure environment for proper development of a child. When you consider the emotional, social, spiritual, and intellectual side of a child you realize there is a lot to influence. Parents must display emotional stability. They will learn that people have good days and bad days, but they need to see parents being good problem solvers. Socially, they need to see how parents interact with others in working situations, hospitable situations, and charitable situations. I already commented on the spiritual aspect of the parent’s influence, however again I will say parents displaying a belief in a God who is in control of all things will give much confidence to the child. Intellectually, parents can influence the importance of a child using their minds to learn what they can. To show the child that learning can be fun and reaching their potential is a worth while goal. Lastly, the importance of a parents influence on a child can be recognized by the impact it has on society. Much power is in the hands of the parents in helping the child become a responsible adult in society. So actually when parents have influence on a child they are also influencing society. This shows how great their responsibility is and important. Ultimately a child makes his/ her own decisions in life. A child may have the best parents and make many unwise decisions or the worst parents and make very wise decisions because of individual will. Still the best hope for a child’s outcome is to have good parents to contribute and better society. In conclusion the influence of parents on a child is very important. When one considers the amount of time they can have with their child and the influence they can have on the child who becomes part of society one can see the awesome responsibility given. The quality and quantity of time, our responsibility toward God, setting proper role models, providing security, and showing responsibility all should be great motivators in helping us see how parents have the most important influence on a child. In the classroom, analysts are concerned about materials and methods and believe that both need to be scrutinized. Unfortunately, as long as our public education institutions are dependent upon government funding to offer their programs, the restrictions and constraints that come along with accepting that money will hinder the analytic process. While the analytic philosophy could have a profound effect on our educational system, our current structure just will not allow it to take hold.

Fast Food Nation Essay Many feel that the fast food industry is providing a valuable service by catering to consumer needs; that it is inexpensive and easily accessible. For people who dont have time to prepare meals, for households in which both parents work, theres no question it provides a service. But all of this for what cost? The cost is the lives of those people who work in the meat processing plants. Meat packing is now the most dangerous job in the United States. The men and women that work in the slaughterhouses now are often low paid, poor immigrants, who have not completely learned English and are practically illiterate. These workers make a knife cut every two or three seconds, which adds up to about 10,000 cuts per eight hour day. One of the leading causes of the high injury rate in the slaughter houses is the speed at which the meat is disassembled. Hearing this, it is no surprise that lacerations are the most common injuries suffered by the men and women working in the meatpacking industry. Workers are under tremendous pressure to work fast and not report any injuries that may occur. The annual bonuses of plant foremen and supervisors are often based in part on the injury rate of their workers. Instead of creating a safer workplace, the supervisors pressure workers not to report any injuries and as a bonus, they would be moved to an easier job to give them some time to heal. Often, in this industry, supervisor pressure is not the only reason that injuries go unreported; the immigrant workers usually do not know enough English to complete the paperwork that goes along with filing injury reports. This manner that runs the lives of slaughterhouse workers is completely unethical. In any business, stopping an employee from receiving due compensation for injuries is unfair and unethical. It seems like that in any other business, if a worker is injured, and does not receive fair compensation, they have the ability and drive to enforce the law; but in the case of the slaughterhouse workers, that are often illiterate, this rarely happens. The fast food industry both feeds and prays off the young. Pioneers in developing marketing strategies to target children, the fast-food chains have even infiltrated the nations schools through lunchroom franchises and special advertising packages that answer public educations need for funds; in every way possible, giving the children a loyal friend to rely on. In many franchises, teenagers are perfect candidates for low-paying, low-skilled, short-term jobs and constitute a large part of the fast-food chains workforce; and often practically run individual locations, having more responsibility than most adults. The intense advertising and responsibilities is not the only thing we saw in Fast Food Nation that effected children. The quality of the meat that is fed to children in school and at the fast food restaurants is in some cases horrendous. Children are not the only age group that eats this tainted food, but they are more greatly harmed by it. E. coli is now the leading pathogen causing kidney failure among children in the US. The E. coli problem begins in the feedlots. The situation we see for these cattle is disgusting. Cattle are forced to eat out of manure filled pits that are likely to carry E. coli (which can be live for 90 days). To add to that, cattle are often fed remains of other animals such as sheep and even other cattle. If feedlots were more humane and sanitary, the infected herds would not infect others, and the meat that is fed to children would less likely give them E. coli. There are ethical concerns in about every business, but none seem to be as intense as the ones found in the meat packing and fast food industry. These issues concern the actual well being of the employee not just finances or material things. I dont know if it will ever be possible for the fast food and meatpacking industries to be safe environments to work in, but I do hope that someday the lives and needs of the workers are considered. There are not many things as important as a human life, hopefully someday; all the components of these industries that endanger these lives are changed, from E. coli to fatal packing plant injuries.

Some people respond well to proper diet and exercise to overcome obesity. For those who do not, however, antiobesity drugs are gaining popularity in pharmaceutical compnaies. One potential antiobesity drug that was recently developed by scientists in France and England is butabindide. This drug works to regulate appetite by breaking down a neurotransmitter that signals satiety. This drug has not yet been administered to humans, but its development may provide information to help with the development of other antiobesity drugs in the future (Jack 1756). 1. What is the ‘naming of parts’ that the title of the poem refers to? The naming of parts refers to the riï ¬â€še lesson in the poem, with the soldiers being taught about the parts of the riï ¬â€še. 2. The ï ¬ rst stanza identiï ¬ es the timeframe of this poem. Explain why ‘yesterday’, ‘today’ and ‘tomorrow’ might be signiï ¬ cant. This talks about the past, present and future, which is why it is signiï ¬ cant. 3. Explain the simile that compares Japonica to coral (lines 4-5). Japonica is a pink ï ¬â€šower that blossoms in bunches on trees in the spring. The poem compares the colour of the japonica to coral, and how it glows and shines. It talks about the beauty of the ï ¬â€šowers, and compares it to that of the coral. 4. In which lines is the title line repeated? What is the effect of this repetition? The line is repeated four times in the whole poem, three times in the ï ¬ rst stanza and once in the last. The effect of the repetition is that it ties the poem together, and it puts emphasis on the title. 5. Who do you think is speaking in this poem and who do you think is being addressed? Give reasons for your answer. I think that the speaker in this poem is a soldier that has just been recruited, and is being taught about how to use his riï ¬â€še. In my opinion, the poem is addressing the soldier himself, or maybe the world, and people in war. 6. In the second stanza, what is meant by the metaphor concerning the branches, and what is meant by the description of them as making ‘silent, eloquent gestures’? I think that Reed is describing the simple beauty of nature, and perhaps how the branches can be compared to human limbs, with gestures that are elegant and expressive. 7. Why do you think the poet has drawn attention to the piling swivel, â€Å"Which in our case we have not got† (line 12)? I presume that Reed has drawn attention to the piling swivel to show that the soldiers are in training, and have not yet received their own riï ¬â€šes, and therefore do not have the piling swivel. 8. The word ‘ï ¬ nger’ is used in two different contexts in the third stanza. What is the meaning of each, and what do you think is the effect of using both in close proximity? The ï ¬ rst mention of the word is a literal context, meaning that they need to use their thumb to release the safety catch, and not their ï ¬ nger. The second seems to me as if it is a comparison of the instructor and the blossoms of a plant. I think that it is so because the soldier has drifted off, and is looking at ï ¬â€šowers while listening to the instructor talk about not using ï ¬ ngers. 9. The fourth stanza begins with the word ‘And’ (line 19). What is the effect of this? It seems like it is a continuation of another sentence, or something that the instructor has said before. It gives us a way to link the ï ¬ rst part of all the stanzas together, as if the nature part of the previous stanza was something completely different. 10. In the same stanza, the phrase ‘easing the spring’ is used twice with two different meanings. What effect is created when these two ideas are considered side by side? The ï ¬ rst meaning is to ease the spring in a riï ¬â€še, a mechanical and literal reference. In the second mention however, the word spring is capitalized, and is referring to the season. When these two are compared to each other, the ï ¬ rst seems like a comparison to war and destruction because of the riï ¬â€še’s use to do so, and the second contrasts with references to reproduction and giving life. It makes a contrast between giving and taking life. 11. There is a lot of imagery associated with sexual reproduction. Give some examples of these words and explain how this language might contribute to the theme of the poem. The â€Å"easing of the spring,† where Reed writes â€Å"rapidly backwards and forwards,† could be associated with sexual reproduction. 12. In contrast, what ideas in the poem evoke the idea of death and destruction? The instructor’s mechanical and almost cynical explanation of how to use the riï ¬â€še, or how to kill and destruct in the war, evokes this idea very clearly. 13. Comment on the phrase: â€Å"..and the point of balance, / Which in our case we have not got†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (lines 27-28). Perhaps this is talking about how the soldier feels that their lives have been thrown out of balance, or how the world is out of balance, engaging in warfare instead of appreciating the beauty of nature around them. 14. Why do you think the poet drew attention to the silence of the almond blossom? (line 29). I do not see any other reason than him wanting to draw attention to the incredible beauty of nature, and how this contrasts with the destructive warfare going on. 15. In your opinion, what is the main theme or message of this poem and how effectively has the poem communicated it? In my opinion, this poem is about the contrasts between the beauty of nature and war. I think this poem communicates this in a very good way once one has read it a few times and identiï ¬ ed the contrasts and metaphors that are hidden. 16. Lastly, write some comments about how your interpretation of the poem has developed since you ï ¬ rst encountered it. Don’t forget to reï ¬â€šect on your artistic interpretations last week – how did they help (or hinder) your growing understanding? Since I ï ¬ rst heard the poem, I have understood more and more of the meaning behind it. At ï ¬ rst, I only grasped the fact that it talks about a riï ¬â€še lesson, and that it probably had a connection to soldiers and war. I didn’t get very much out of the artistic interpretation last week, other than exploring the nature/war relationship more. Business Fundamentals Essay

This course will provide the student with information about business operations and business vocabulary and it will help direct the thinking of each student to the field of business best suited for her/his interest and talent. Subject matter includes an analysis of the specialized fields within the business organization. The course covers concepts of business, management functions, organizational considerations, and decision-making processes. This course is beneficial to business majors and non-business majors. There is no prerequisite. (If you are trying to make a decision as to the course you should take next, Principles of Management is a good choice for business majors. ) PUBLISHER’S WEBSITE This book also has a website that is first rate! I encourage you to use all the materials that are available to you especially this website. The student site is located at: www. mhhe. com/ub9e PREREQUISITE Working knowledge of the use of computers, email and the internet. COURSE REQUIREMENTS 1) Complete the orientation quiz and Biz game for 5 extra credit points added to the avg of your exam scores for each!. 2) Read the text book chapters. 3) Complete the stock project and the Biz Game. 4) Students are highly encouraged to keep up and on schedule. Homework or extra credit projects may be graded for extra credit or as a sign of effort (at the discretion of instructor). Each extra credit assignment is worth 5 points on an exam. 5) Students are required to get the help they need in a timely fashion (do not wait till the end of the semester). If for some reason, your messages are not returned in a timely manner, it is up to you to follow up and get help. Make sure you include your name, section number and the name of your class in all communications. Sometimes my schedule is hectic so don’t waste time waiting, contact again if you don’t get the help you need. READING It is important to read the chapters. Also, all the test questions come from the textbook. EXAMS All tests will be given at the testing centers. All of the exams are multiple choice. The student will be allowed to use pencils, scantron, and ruled paper. Since this is an introductory course, many of the exam questions will be definitions. There will also be several theory questions on each exam and not much history. My plan is to ask a lot of easy questions about almost everything. Exams are scored as the percentage correct. It is up to the student to check that the grades are posted correctly. Please keep your copy of your test scores as they have been known to disappear. On some exams short answer or essay questions might be available for extra credit. These are NOT open book exams, and you will NOT be able to use notes for these exams. Late Exams It is extremely rare for a student to be successful in the course once they get behind. To ease your scheduling, I will list the week you should take the test to stay on schedule. If you take an exam after the assigned time and date, 2 points may be deducted from your test score for everyday after the exam date that you take it. **TESTING CENTERS The tests may be taken at any of the following ACC testing centers: Rio Grande Campus Riverside Campus Eastview Campus Northridge Campus Round Rock CampusCypress Creek Campus Pinnacle Campus Fredericksburg Campus San Marcos High School The testing centers in bold above are able to administer the exams via computer which will automatically give you your grade as well as feedback when the exam is completed. You may use the others but realize that until I receive the exam from the testing center, I cannot post your grades. Check with the center you are interested in for their hours and allow 1 1/12 hours to take the exams. You will need a student identification (or fee receipt card) and a picture identification (drivers’ license works great) to take the exams in the testing centers. You can get student identification at the Bursar’s Office at any of our main campuses. Extra Credit Completion of the orientation quiz and information sheet is worth 5 extra credit points to be added to your exam scores. Completion of the Biz Game is another 5 points. Additional extra credit opportunities are in the assignment section. A student must have completed all exams and assignments to date, be passing, and have circumstances that prevent course completion that occur after the deadline to withdraw with a grade of â€Å"W†. All work to complete the course must be completed before the end of the following semester for the granting of an appropriate grade. Failure to do so will result in a failing grade for the course. The instructor must be notified before the end of the semester if the students need an incomplete and all work must be made up as soon as possible. Incompletes are not recommended as students will miss the extra credit for finishing on time and many incompletes are never completed. Also see departmental policies below. ACADEMIC PROGRESS A student who is not meeting course objectives may be withdrawn from the course at the discretion of the instructor. If something does not make sense make a note and ask a  fellow student or your instructor to help you understand the concept. Complete all assignments. ask questions, you are probably not the only one who has that question. If you miss something, be able to explain to yourself or someone else why you missed the answer. Again relate the information to your life. Use the student CD that comes with the book. Ignoring it is to lose a great tool for the course. The most important thing to remember about answering questions is to READ the Questions Carefully. Make sure you understand what the question is asking. Eliminate extraneous data you might be given! Check on the Blackboard site regularly. Get in a study group if possible. Work together and prepare for exams together. Mccarthyism by A Myan. McCarthyism is a term named for Joseph McCarthy, a republican senator from Wisconsin from 1946 to 1957. McCarthyism began, as it is know today, with Senator McCarthy's accusations in February 1950 that Communists had infiltrated the Department of State. He continued to accuse high-ranking officials of treasonous activities for the next three years even though his accusations were never substantiated. McCarthyism is simply the practice of making accusations of political disloyalty with insufficient evidence. The McCarthy Era refers to the wave of political repression in the late 1940's and early 1950's, which targeted the communist party.McCarthyism itself had begun years before Senator Joseph McCarthy had even come to national attention. The House Committee of Un-American Activities (HUAC), established in 1945 is best known for anti-Communist investigations, called witch-hunts by those who opposed them because of their similarities with the Salem Witch Trials. Blacklisting in the fil m industry began in 1947 when people were refused jobs because they had been accused of being members of the American Communist Party or having some connection to Communism.English: Sen. The blacklist developed after the HUAC, held public hearings to investigate the influence of Communists in the motion picture industry. The different social backgrounds that were overlooked by this patriarchal tendency include religion and social values, as all this was embedded in classical values as shown by the sidelines at which women were kept. There were also leadership issues towards the renaissance of women in early modern Europe, where there was debate about female rulers, where royal born women were given an education and rights (McKay 393). This was part of the renaissance in that it openly defied gender roles and partially welcomed female responsibility, where women could be rulers. In addition, ownership of property was fully meant for the glory of men, where they were to be honored and respected by women at all times since they were at the mercy of men. These also involved keeping women away from public life and we re isolated at home in an attempt to ensure that their fertility was preserved towards the purity of bloodlines. This is in an attempt to ensure that male line of inheritance was purely familial and not from bastard sons. The above is termed as part of keeping man away from evil following biblical accounts stating that Eve was the villain that brought about suffering unto man thus purity as further depicted by the story of the virgin Mary had to be maintained (McKay 396). In addition, this occurred by keeping women isolated in their homes, where even artwork in the form of paintings indicate the isolation of women by being drawn next to windows (McKay 417). This is especially so in the case of England and France, where the church had a strong influence and only served to ensure that the traditionalist trends of the day and age were followed. This serves towards showing the lack of a renaissance for women in modern Europe due to religious lines and traditionalist ideologies that kept women away from owning property and even having a life outside of their houses as they were seen as treacherous beings (McKay 396). In addition to this, their sense of worth was highly demeaned, as their parents had to pay bride price for their marriage making the perception towards them be highly negative as they were of no economic worth except bringing expenses.
